Sessions Together
Being a Dad of a teenage boy has its moments, and sometimes those moments are hard.
Maybe your son barely talks to you anymore, or you’re butting heads over school, screen time, and things that never used to be a big deal.
You’re worried about his confidence, his choices, and where he’s headed. Somewhere in the middle of it all, you start asking yourself a hard question.
Am I doing this right?
After 25 years of working with teenage boys, I’ve learned that what you’re seeing isn’t always what’s really going on.
And sometimes, understanding your son starts with taking a closer look at what’s happening between you.
He loves his son. But when things go wrong, his instinct is to step in, take charge, and fix it. Sometimes that works. Sometimes it drives his son further away.
He’s got the fun stuff down. They joke, hang out, and get along. But when things get real, neither knows quite how to go there.
He leads without controlling and listens without backing down. He knows when to step in, when to step back, and how to stay connected through the tough stuff.
Your son doesn’t need a perfect dad.
He needs a present one.
The core of the work
When you become less reactive and better able to hear what’s actually happening, the conversation changes.
And when the conversation changes, the relationship has room to change too.
Understand what’s typical teenage behavior, what deserves a closer look, and how your own reactions may be affecting the relationship.
Notice when frustration, worry, and anger get stirred up, before they take over, so you can respond with a clear head instead of reacting in the heat of the moment.
Communicate with more confidence, hold boundaries without constant battles, and make room for good conversations.
“I have been working with Rob for about two months now, with weekly sessions. I started with seeing a change in the way that I felt about myself, and then started to see tangible results from the program. Rob brings a great customized program to meet your goals and is really easy to communicate with. He is holistically focused on your mental, physical, and spiritual health. Looking forward to continuing to work with him more.”
Josh, Coaching Client
“I highly recommend Rob Owen’s coaching for anyone seeking a more balanced, present, and focused way of life. Rob has a wealth of knowledge, practices, and tools to help you create more fluidity and structure in your life so you can do more of what matters to you and feel calm and centered at the same time. Rob embodies what he teaches and offers a safe, grounded, and encouraging space for you to take your life to this next level.”
Dr. Laurie, Licensed Clinical Psychologist
“Rob’s ability to connect with my son in a genuine way was beyond impressive. What stood out to me was the mutual respect between them. I could see that my son respected Rob and felt respected in return. During their time working together, I noticed my son was willing to step up to handling challenges, not because he felt he was required to, but because he wanted to. I also noticed a change in how he was able to take advice. Instead of the immediate opposition to advice I offered, I felt we were able to have more of a conversation, where we heard each other’s opinions.”
Ernie, Parent of Teenage Son
“Rob offers a natural balance and focus in his sessions that support others to do the same. I have four teens who have been taking Rob’s classes for over a year now—he connects well with them and inspires them, and I can see the difference in their resilience and focus at home, in the classroom, and with their peers. In a world where kids are overstimulated by tech in school and at home, Tai Chi offers a natural way for them to ground themselves and find connection in movement, and Rob is a great resource for this!”
Alexandra, Parent of Four Teens, Physician
“If I could give Rob a 6th star I would! Rob started teaching my oldest son 10 years ago, and he was a life-changing presence and educator. Rob is both very warm and can be firm when needed, and is always plugged in and deeply inspiring. He is very talented in working specifically with ADHD. He is able to draw the focused creativity out of his students, leaving them feeling better about themselves and knowing themselves at a deeper level.”
Kea, Parent of Two Sons, Acupuncturist
“Rob helped us so much around executive functioning, health, and emotional support! He figured out what worked for us and helped to implement strategies and tools that we still use today. I highly recommend Rob!”
Jennifer, Parent of Teenager
For Dads
If you’re second-guessing yourself, losing your patience, or struggling to connect with your son, this is a place to work through it with another man who gets it.
We’ll work on the things you can control: your reactions, your communication, your confidence, and how you show up.
For Teenage Boys
School struggles. Big emotions. Low confidence. Social pressure. A kid who doesn’t seem to know where he fits.
Sometimes a boy needs another trusted adult who can see his strengths, understand his world, and help him build the skills to move forward.
We can also work together as father and son. We’ll figure out the right starting point in our first conversation.
I’ve spent 25 years teaching and mentoring teenage boys, including plenty who were shutting down, acting out, or struggling to put what they were feeling into words.
I’ve founded a school, written books, and spent decades learning what makes young men tick.
I’m also a dad raising two teenage sons of my own. So I know what it’s like to have all the experience in the world and still struggle to get through to your own kid.
Here’s what I’ve learned: You don’t reach a boy by trying harder to fix him.
My approach starts with strengths, not shortcomings. We look at what’s working, what’s getting in the way, and what needs to shift.
Find the common ground and grow from there.
